South Bank, London- Revisited

Sam and I finally decided that we have had enough of London. It’s time to get out now while the goings good… April Fools! (Worst practical joke ever, right?)

After our trip to Borough Market last week we also had a wander along the South Bank, heading away from the National and other major tourist destinations past Blackfriars. The tide was low so we were even able to briefly hunt for treasure on some spots of the shore of the Thames. (Thames beach?).

I was also able to cross something off my ABCs of Spring Bucket list. I had my first 99 Flake. (Or the 99 p Flake as I stupidly, incessantly was calling it.) English soft serve ice cream with a Cadbury Flake stuck into it. I can’t believe I’ve spent so many years in England so indulging in it!

And no walk through the Southwark area would be complete for my without a good rant about my least favourite building in London, the Shard. To be honest, I definitely want to go to the 31st floor bar to sip cocktails and look at the rest of London from that vantage point, but I really dislike the way the Shard looms into the skyline like some creepy funnel of evil a la The Ghostbusters.

And just in case you wanted some River Thames trivia, I can provide that for you.

1. The boat chase in ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ was filmed on the Thames.
2. 2/3rds of London’s drinking water comes from the Thames.
3. Monet painted the Thames 3 times.
4. Planes used the Thames to navigate at night during the Blitz.
5. The Thames is the aquatic inspiration for “The Wind in the Willows”
