Being in England for the World Cup

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned about soccer  football whilst in England, it is that it’s more than just a sport to a lot of people. It’s a way of life.  Alas, all such natural inclinations towards remotely caring about sports passed me by and mutated to become the sports fiend that is my brother.

But the World Cup starts tomorrow, so who better to write to you today than my household’s own football fanatic? Take it away Sam!

Amanda: “Football makes my brain swell.”

The World Cup starts on Thursday! Hooray! There’s not much that fills me with joy like a global-scale sporting event. I can happily watch pretty much any sport, but the World Cup is like nothing else.
It’s a month-long celebration of all-things football (soccer, elsewhere) as the finest players on earth come together in Brazil, where this tournament is being held. 64 matches played in 12 different stadiums and every minute of it is shown on TV. Every minute. Of every game.
Are you listening, Amanda?

Yes, I’m afraid that my dream of watching every minute of the World Cup is destined to remain just that. A beautiful dream. There’s absolutely no way that Amanda will allow an overload of sport for an entire month. I’m lucky to catch a glimpse of my favourite team on Match of the Day; I had to stay up alone to watch the SuperBowl; I’ll watch England play their games but that’s it, I reckon… There’s no way that I can persuade her to watch the World Cup with me.

Unless.

Perhaps the way to lure Amanda into watching the World Cup is to alert her to any attractive players, coaches, managers. I may ask her to assemble her Brazil 2014: Sexy Team – the team of hottest men. I think this trick may work: there’s nothing she loves more than compiling a list. Perhaps she will sit happily, completely oblivious to the happenings of the game, scouring the field for men to add to the team.

(Jamie Redknapp: Now retired, but always captain of Amanda’s team. Congratulations Jamie.)

Maybe this can work. Amanda’s Sexy Team Gone Global. I could even ask her to post it here, really get a strong discussion going? That way she will be fully absorbed in the tournament and will actively put the games on as ‘research’. This is a brilliant, brilliant plan.
(I doubt even this will get her interested, if I’m honest).

Will you be watching the World Cup? Who do you want to win and who wins your personal World Cup Sexy Prize?
