Joy Comes to Brixton

Joy has returned to Brixton! And I don’t mean the feeling of happiness (although I do get that when I’m shopping) but Joy the Store. Joy is one of my favourite shops in England. I can always go in and find something that I want. Which is why I try to avoid going in frequently. But sometimes, you just have to be lured in. Last Wednesday was one of those times.

Brixton is just a short bus ride away from my flat, and when I heard that Joy was hoisting a re-opening party complete with free cocktails, Joy vouchers and a nail booth I knew  I’d pop in. Joy was founded in Brixton in 1999, but had to leave their flagship Coldharbour Lane store earlier this year when their lease was not renewed due to planned building of a huge Holiday Inn.  Luckily, they’ve finally been able to find a new premises in the area and reopen! Joy grew out of Brixton to a chain of about 25 shops around England and it’s nice to see them back in their home.

Their reopening party was 90s themed, to honor their roots; the DJ played 90s music and the nail artist offered 90s patterns (ranging from tie-dye to Clueless plaid.) Alice, the nail artist, was fabulous, and I’d like to give her a shout-out. She doesn’t have a website but you can check out her instagram.
