Behind the Scenes at Chipotle

It’s no secret that I am a massive Chipotle fan. I always have been, but I especially appreciated it after I moved to London and found that edible burritos were few and far between. What can I say? Being from the American Southwest I have extremely high expectations for burritos. Once during my first month in London, at a pub, I ordered a plate of nachos and I rue it to this day. It was a plateful of soggy corn tortilla chips with some microwaved marinara sauce and some plastic cheese. Not even a jalapeño in sight. I was horrified and after one bite, pushed my plate away like the spoiled princess that I can be when faced with bad Mexican food. But I digress.

Chipotle got me through college. I’d have half a burrito for dinner, wrap the rest up and then have the other half in the morning as the best cold breakfast ever. So when the invite to poke around behind the scenes at the busiest Chipotle in Europe (the Baker Street branch) turned up in my inbox there was no way I was missing out. We were greeted with margaritas (which were delicious) and snacked on chips and salsa whilst learning a bit more about Chipotle’s ethos. I knew that they had a focus on free-range meat and recycling, but I didn’t realise to what extent. Also everyone who worked there seemed to love their jobs and Chipotle seemed to appreciate their staff, in turn.

We then got to explore the kitchen and see their massive walk in refrigerator and the giant tubs of beans and rice all before being taught how to make their famous guacamole. Unlike my own guacamole recipe, Chipotle doesn’t add tomatoes. Regardless, I still love it and it’s my favourite take-away guac out there. Chipotle makes all their guacamole from scratch in the largest bowls I’ve ever seen and it’s a true workout to crush all those avocados.

After that we dug into some truly delicious burritos, and I pondered yet again how I could get someone to deliver me a tub of that corn salsa every day.
