Fashion || Paring Down my Closet and Going Back to the Basics

Over the past few months, I’ve done a massive wardrobe cull. I’m trying to pare my wardrobe down to the basics, which doesn’t mean the neutral clothing, which is what is featured in most capsule wardrobes. Never fear, the flower dresses remain front and centre. But after realising that despite the breadth of my clothing choices, I reach for the same things over and over again, so I’ve figured – let’s get rid of the rest!

Out went things that could only be paired with one other thing, or dresses that only get worn when I feel specially thin. I talked myself out of ridding myself of a few pieces that I never wear for sentimental reasons, but we’ll see what comes of it in the next few months. To be honest, it feels good. Like really, really good. You don’t have that expensive dress you bought for a special date a few years ago but never wore again staring you in the eye every time you go to grab your favourite LBD reminding you of money wasted. You don’t have the regret of “this looked better on my in college”. Gone.

That being said, I did realise that some of my key basics were looking a bit worse for wear and needed to be replaced. Like a now yellowed Oxford shirt, and my staple relaxed black blazer that is basically a disgrace now. True story: my black blazer has lasted me for almost 10 years and came from Target for less than $20 originally. It was the perfect blazer for me, relaxed so it could be paired with tee shirts, but with enough weight to it that it could be dressed up for work. Sadly it now has a dreadful mystery stain all over the front that refuses to budge no matter what I do. (It’s not really a mystery. I got burrito all over it and I can’t get it off.)

It turns out that I’m really picky with blazers and prefer them not to be as nipped and tailored as 99% of them that I have found online. Relaxed, with interesting lining that shows when I roll my cuffs up and at least one pocket. Is that really so much to ask? There have been two that I have spotted online and been quite keen on, and then read the description and saw that they were maternity blazers. Fail.

What basics do you go through quickly? Anyone have a blazer suggestion? Please send them my way! (I’ve already spent many an hour on ASOS)
