Life Lately || On Turning 28

I’m turning 28  this weekend, and whilst I’m not at all terrified about getting older (despite my developing crows feet), I realised that I had some suggestions I wanted to share with my younger self. My faux-wisdom as collected in my years on this planet so far.

happy birthday

1. It’s okay to say no. You don’t need to do all the work, or take up every opportunity.

2. Breakfast really is the best way to start your day and porridge is the king of breakfast prepping you for the day.

3. Being successful doesn’t mean having an “important” job. Being successful can mean being creative, having a nice job but having time for hobbies you love, and everything in between. Success doesn’t mean white collar jobs and loads of money.

4. Exercise really does make you feel better, but that doesn’t mean you’ll ever find the gym fun or necessary. Outdoor exercise is much better.

5. You honestly don’t need to buy clothing all the time.

6. A weekend break will never feel like a relaxing holiday, but it will be so much fun that you won’t mind being exhausted at work on Monday.

7.  I’d rather eat my calories than drink them. Give me a slice of cake over a beer any day.

8. That being said, if you are drinking, never underestimate the power of alternating drinks with glasses of water.

9. Your metabolism will disappear after 26. Eat as many pizzas as possible whilst you still have the chance.

10. You don’t need to wash your hair more than twice a week, really.

11. You’ll usually feel more confident the more comfortable you feel in an outfit.

12. Read for the sake of reading. Always have a good book on hand, and one that you can recommend to other people.

13. Being an adult doesn’t mean you have to stop dreaming and be serious all the time. You can still be silly, and you can definitely still “camp” in the living room sometimes.

14. Baby fever is a real thing. As is dog fever. Basically things that are small and cuddly can become highly appealing.

15. It’s okay to not make everyone happy.

16. Hugging someone every day will make your day immensely better.

17. It’s okay to cry, even if other people don’t understand all your emotions. (I have a lot of feels!)

18. Try to learn something new every day. Just because school’s over doesn’t mean you can’t learn a new trick or fact.

19. Healthy food can be just as tasty as junk food.

20. It doesn’t matter how many different things you know how to bake, if you can do one thing super well, people will think you are a master baker.

21. Hair grows back so take a risk instead of thinking “Would I look good with….?”

22. Remind the people in your life that you love and appreciate them.

23. Minimising can make you feel better. Use less, want less, buy less it will lead to you having more money, but also a decluttered home can make everything you do own look more expensive.

24. There’s no such thing as a job that wastes your education. Education is not something that can be wasted.

25. Drink tons of water; your skin will thank you for it in future years.

26. Know that making friends gets harder as you get older, but the ones that you’ve kept so far will be your friends forever. Never doubt your ability to pick right back up where you left off with them.

27. Splurging on an experience gives you more happy feels than splurging on a thing. You won’t regret that spur of the moment adventure.

28. There’s no shame in continuing to be excited about your birthday.
