Wearing Fascinators and Drinking Pimm’s: Royal Ascot

My time at Royal Ascot had a completely different vibe from last year, but thanks to Appletiser for once again inviting me. For one, we weren’t there on Ladies’ Day, so it wasn’t quite as crowded. For another, it epically rained during significant portions of our time at Royal Ascot. Last year we weren’t prepared at all; this year we were laden down with picnic blankets and food galore. In our rush to leave the house, however, there was one highly important thing we forget: an umbrella.

After finding a seat and taking in the sights for approximately 3 minutes, the heavens opened and it absolutely poured for about 30 minutes. Sam did the gentlemanly thing and gave me his coat and ran off to purchase an umbrella. (I’d like to hand it to Ascot – their massive golf-sized umbrellas are excellent quality and whilst £15 is a lot to pay for an umbrella, they could have charged miles more.) I had also wrapped myself up in our picnic blanket to try to stay dry, forever coining the expression “blanket troll”. And henceforth, I shall always be known by that nickname.

But the sky cleared up just in time for the Queen to come out. I got to see her and Prince Phillip last year, but this year I was thrilled to add Camilla, Charles, William and Kate to the procession of royals that I was within yards of. Sidenote: the Queen has the best wave ever. No one can wave like her. Also, Kate definitely waved at me, which is pretty awesome. After that, it rained on and off all day, but nothing was like that first downpour.

Sam ended up being down all day, and I ended up winning enough to cover my bets. (Thanks to picking horses based on whose names I found the most adorable.) To my utter shock and horror, I’m pretty sure the couple next to us bet over a thousand pounds on one horse and seemed to be pretty non-plussed at losing it all.
