Eats || Autumn Menu at Pizza Express

Pizza, pizza, pizza I chant to myself. Honestly, I could eat it every day. Pizza has to be the most glorious food ever invented. That meant that when I had a chance to review the new Autumn menu at Pizza Express, I leapt at the opportunity.

I went to the Herne Hill Pizza Express and I’d like to give a big shout out to the staff. Everyone was super lovely and you could tell they had great repartee with the locals. Pizza Express is a classic. You know what you’re going to get, and you know it’s going to be reasonably priced.

We started with the old classic: bruschetta (£5.35 ) – a Pizza Express dough base brushed with garlic butter and topped with chopped fresh tomato, red onion, fresh basil and pesto- before moving on to some of the new Autumn items. I liked the kick the red onion gave to the bruschetta, but I think that I prefer my bruschetta on a crunchier base.

The pizza Rustichella Romana (£11.75) was back this season by popular demand so I knew I had to try it. It consisted of pancetta, mozzarella and tomato finished with rocket, shaved Gran Milano cheese, roasted tomatoes and Caesar dressing. It was super tasty, though the caesar dressing made my leftovers the next day extra soggy. The roasted tomatoes on it were the true winner for me. Sam sampled the Basilicata Romana (£12.55) – lamb, mint and chilli meatballs, red onion, mozzarella and garlic oil on a Capia pepper and tomato base, finished with rocket, shaved Gran Milano cheese and basil pesto. He went nuts for it and declared “I think I’ve found my pizza!” For any Turkish food lovers out there, the Basilicata tasted a lot like lahmacun.

We finished off by splitting the new Autumn dessert, the chocolate fondant (£6.40). I wish we hadn’t split it. It was one of my favourite desserts that I’ve ever had at Pizza Express. Its centre was just so superbly melty!

  • Lamb pizza is so good! We had a favorite restaurant in Sundsvall that did a lamb pizza, one time we went though the server got a bit confused with the mix of English and Swedish and when our order came she had though Fredrik ordered the roast lamb instead of lamb pizza! Fredrik tried to act disappointed since it was more expensive but in the end he was so pleased with it!

    • Sam was the one to introduce me to lamb years ago. Growing up, it just didn’t exist in my culinary world at all. I’m so glad it does now! x

  • That looks like a proper pizza! Yum 🙂

  • Sam’s pizza just sounds divine! We’ve always had such a lovely time at our local pizza express, and seeing as it was where we ended up eating dinner on our first date (and then we had a pretty special evening on our 3 year anniversary when they wrote off our bill after we’d finished as a surprise treat!) it’s always been that bit extra too! • That is the sweetest story! Had you told them that it was your anniversary? xx

      • Adam had planned it so it was special, dropping off flowers for the table, and pre-ordering my G&T and a bottle of prosecco to be ready and waiting for us on the table when we arrived! He also had specifically asked if they could replicate the trio of desserts we’d had on our first date even though the menu had changed! So sweet! xxx

  • I’m impressed by the pizza Rustichella Romana. The ingredients look very attractive and delicious. The chocolate fondant is also a remarkable dish.

  • ooo chocolate fondant. We JUST passed up pizza express for dessert the other night claiming “meh, there’s never very many good desserts there” Well now I know!

    • I usually feel pretty “meh” about the desserts so it was nice to have a good one for a change! x
