Pizza, pizza, pizza I chant to myself. Honestly, I could eat it every day. Pizza has to be the most glorious food ever invented. That meant that when I had a chance to review the new Autumn menu at Pizza Express, I leapt at the opportunity.
I went to the Herne Hill Pizza Express and I’d like to give a big shout out to the staff. Everyone was super lovely and you could tell they had great repartee with the locals. Pizza Express is a classic. You know what you’re going to get, and you know it’s going to be reasonably priced.
We started with the old classic: bruschetta (£5.35 ) – a Pizza Express dough base brushed with garlic butter and topped with chopped fresh tomato, red onion, fresh basil and pesto- before moving on to some of the new Autumn items. I liked the kick the red onion gave to the bruschetta, but I think that I prefer my bruschetta on a crunchier base.
The pizza Rustichella Romana (£11.75) was back this season by popular demand so I knew I had to try it. It consisted of pancetta, mozzarella and tomato finished with rocket, shaved Gran Milano cheese, roasted tomatoes and Caesar dressing. It was super tasty, though the caesar dressing made my leftovers the next day extra soggy. The roasted tomatoes on it were the true winner for me. Sam sampled the Basilicata Romana (£12.55) – lamb, mint and chilli meatballs, red onion, mozzarella and garlic oil on a Capia pepper and tomato base, finished with rocket, shaved Gran Milano cheese and basil pesto. He went nuts for it and declared “I think I’ve found my pizza!” For any Turkish food lovers out there, the Basilicata tasted a lot like lahmacun.
We finished off by splitting the new Autumn dessert, the chocolate fondant (£6.40). I wish we hadn’t split it. It was one of my favourite desserts that I’ve ever had at Pizza Express. Its centre was just so superbly melty!
