Fashion || Preparing to Transition Your Autumn Wardrobe Into Winter

It’s that time of year again when layering is king! I don’t know about you, but I love being able to create unique ensembles using the garments I already own. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy buying new things and playing into fresh trends as much as the next fashion enthusiast. But sometimes your budget doesn’t allow for that, which is why it comes in handy to be able to adapt what you currently have in your wardrobe to fit in with a variety different seasonal styles.

This is especially true when it comes to fall and winter. Many people don’t realize that a lot of your fall wardrobe can easily be transformed to become the base of your winter wardrobe. All it takes is a few key techniques to learn how you can make any autumn piece work perfectly for winter as the months turn colder.

Layer Your Oxford Shirt

A popular article in any girl’s wardrobe is the quintessential Oxford shirt. There’s something about a button-down that is both crisp and timeless, and it goes great with practically anything. But when the temperatures dip into colder territories your Oxford can start to feel a little too breezy. The good news is that you can still incorporate the smartness you love into your cold-weather wear—just layer the Oxford under a favourite sweater. A range of combinations works, and you can add chunky statement jewellery to elevate the look even more! This piece does a great job explaining different ways to nail this look.

Maxis with Booties

Maxi dresses were once a summer and spring item but, as we’ve seen this season, they’ve now moved into fall territory. Flowing, feminine, and just a tad bohemian, maxi dresses have become a must for autumn fashion. But what do you do when winter comes? Simply start wearing booties and big, warm coats with your maxis. This page provides some inspiration for how to transform a shirtdress maxi alongside other seasonal ideas. There is no reason you can’t still wear your favourite frocks without freezing. Make sure you wear socks with your booties, and you can put a shirt on underneath if need be.

Swap Minis for Midis

In the autumn months, you can still get away with showing a lot of leg. Even if it is a little chilly, all you have to do is add a pair of tights or tall socks, and your mini skirt or dress is seasonally appropriate. However, this trick doesn’t work as well for winter. Instead of trying to recreate the same exact outfit, swap out the mini skirt for a midi skirt—you can wear virtually everything you’d wear with the mini but now your look is a lot more practical. Here’s an article for a few ideas that you can take a look at.

When it comes to transitioning your fall wardrobe into winter, all you have to remember is that layers and lengths are key. If you choose to wear something that fares better in warm weather, accent it with heavy winter items to account for the lack of fabric. You can do anything when you learn how to layer like a pro! There’s no need to buy a new wardrobe each time the seasons change.
