Travel || Breakfast at Mad & Kaffe in Copenhagen

When I posted on instagram that I wanted recommendations for Copenhagen, Jaye chimed in immediately that I had to visit Mad & Kaffe. After a brief stalking of the restaurant’s instagram and website, I was sure that I had to go. And it was worth every once of effort it took to get up early that Sunday, breakfast at Mad & Kaffe in Copenhagen was one of the best breakfasts that I’ve ever had.

It opens at 8:30 am and the website advises that if you definitely want to get a table, you need to arrive pre-9:30 am. But from various reviews on TripAdvisor, etc, I heard that on the weekends even pre-9:30 you might not get a table. So I did what every normal (high-strung) person does: I got there slightly before the cafe opened so that I could guarantee that I got a table. The reason I did this was two-fold. 1) I definitely didn’t want to miss out on experiencing Mad & Kaffe and 2) I couldn’t spend hours waiting for a table because I needed to cram so many more things into my last day in Copenhagen. So I got to Mad & Kaffe around 8:20am and lo and behold at least a dozen people had the exact same idea that I had. There were enough tables that I didn’t need to wait at all, but had I come a bit later I definitely would have!

Now on to the food: for breakfast you create your own “plate” and you can order either 3 (£9.20), 5 (£14.16) or 7 items (£17.46). I’d already planned what I was going to have before I arrived (3 items that I was super pumped about), but when I glanced around at other people’s dishes, I decided to go big and opt for the 5 item plate. I started my meal with a massive iced vanilla latte (it was one of the most incredible iced lattes that I’ve ever had). For my 5 items I chose: the half avocado with chilli oil and baked almonds; the organic cinnamon bun (I’m not going to lie, this was what I was most excited about); the soy blueberry yogurt with muesli and berries; the scrambled eggs with chives and mushrooms; and last, but certainly not least, the homemade cream cheese with sourdough and rye bread.

My avocado was lovely and ripe. The combination of the almonds was great (and something I never would have thought of) but I would have preferred my chilli oil to be a tad spicier. The scrambled eggs were fluffy, airy and moist the way perfect scrambled eggs should be. The rye and sourdough breads were both excellent and the Danish cream cheese was more akin to Southern American pimiento cheese, than any cream cheese I’ve ever had. And since I love and miss pimiento cheese, I loved this!

As I said, I was most excited for my Danish pastry because everything I had read in my pre-Copenhagen research is that Denmark does some of the best pastries in the entire world. And my research was absolutely spot-on. Imagine the best croissant that you’ve ever had. Now imagine that with swirls of butter cinnamon throughout. Sounds pretty great, right? Now add a chocolate centre. And presto – best pastry ever! I could have eaten a dozen of them, but I sufficed with one. Last but not least was the humble yogurt. Man alive. I could not overstate just how much I loved this dish. I don’t know what exactly it was, but it was the best yogurt muesli combo that I’ve ever had in my life. I’m almost drooling just thinking about it!

I spent about an hour sitting outside, soaking up the Danish sun and feasting like a king. I couldn’t recommend it more!

Mad & Kaffe is located at Sønder boulevard 68, 1720 København V.

How incredibly tasty does this breakfast look?! What’s the best breakfast that you’ve ever had?
