Baked Goods & Sweet Treats

The Bake Off Bake Along Returns

I ummed and ahhed about hosting the #bakeoffbakealong this year. Despite having done it now for a few years, I was feeling less than thrilled this year. Mostly due to the show’s move to Channel 4. I was scared that it was going to be less about baking and extremely gimmicky. More about wacky bakes, or crazy contestants. I admired the animation of the Season 8 trailer, but I hated the trailer itself. I didn’t think it boded well for the future of the show.

I knew that I needed to make a decision about hosting before the series started though.

But here’s the thing. It’s A LOT of effort hosting the #bakeoffbakealong every week for the duration of the season. But I always did it before out of a love for the program and a joy for baking.

This year it’s a gamble.

So Channel 4, please don’t let me down.

The rules are the same as last year.

Bake Off Airs on Tuesday evenings, and we will be posting the link up and our bakes for the week’s episodes on the following Monday. So your first chance to link up will be Monday September 4th. You have to bake your take on that week’s challenge; be it the showstopper, the technical or the signature bake.

It will hopefully still be loads of fun and it’s a brilliant chance to share a love for baking, eat some amazing treats over the next few weeks and maybe there will even be an opportunity to win a prize!

I hope to see as many of you as possible for the first link up next week! #bakeoffbakealong

I can’t wait to see what everyone bakes! (Anyone can link up – the link up will be posted here on Rhyme & Ribbons first thing Monday morning. You’ll just have to link your post in a link up box – all will be made clear if you’ve never done it before.) If you want more information on the bake along just pop a question in the comment section below, or you can peruse my archives by searching “Bake Off” to see previous years creations.

We had over 500+ uses of the #bakeoffbakealong hashtag last year, so here’s to an even bigger year.

Take a look through last year’s Bake Off Bake Along Recap and its linked posts to get an idea about how it works.

Will you be baking along with me?

  • Yes! You’re a babe, thank you to giving in to my Nagging about the bake along again! Fingers crossed its marvellous, can’t wait! 🙂 Alice xxxx

    • It got a good review in the Guardian – the press got an early preview. Did you read it? xx

      • Oooh no I’ll look now, phew, hopefully our fears are unfounded!! xxx

  • I may join in every now & then. I’ll be on maternity leave in about a month, so this seems like a nice non-baby related thing to do! Though I am likely to drop out after it arrives, ha. 🙂

I’m pretty apprehensive about the show, too, but am trying to stay positive. It will be very interesting to see how Noel Fielding does…I do like Prue Leith, though. I’m mostly worried as I read something that said they took out the video about the history of baking, which I always loved.

    • I loved that section too! But I did notice that it got shorter and less often as the series went on. (I think other people joked about it being their time to get a cup of tea and a snack – but I loved it.)

I find Noel Fielding pretty funny, but it’s so “off brand” for him (which i’m sure will be part of the joke) but I am just not convinced by that idea yet. I do like Prue Leith though so we shall see! x

  • No baking for me but I will be watching with interest. I was initially gutted about the BBC losing the show to Channel 4 but with Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig on board, I think it *could* be okay…We shall see.

    • And Prue Leith really knows her stuff. So it definitely has potential. I just don’t know if I’ll be able to look beyond the whole greed aspect of it all! x

  • I’m so, so glad the bake along is back – and I may just get involved with it now I’m freelance! But, I have the same reservations about the programme…

  • Exciting!! I’m glad to see it back on 🙂 I’ll definitely try to participate when I can!

Oh, that sounds great! I’ll definitely try and Bake Along but with pesky exams at the end of September I might just have to stick to Instagramming…

  • Woo I’m glad it’s back! I’m not a baker but very excited to follow along everyones posts!

  • I am also apprehensive but of course I’m going to watch it anyway! I’m back to working in London full time and commuting daily from Oxford for September and October, but if I can fit it into my schedule I will definitely join in 🙂

    • Eek! What a dreaded commute! Well your bakes are always a joy to read about so whenever you can link up, please do! xx

  • I wasn’t sure if I should watch, but if you are going to, then I think it’s OK for me to not boycott it!
I hated the advert too – the “we all stand together” message was stupid, like a passive aggressive call to action for the BBC loyalists to join them in Channel 4. Boo.

    • It was very passive aggressive and the animation was impressive but the final result was creepy. But the Guardian got to preview a few episodes and said that it was the same Bake Off we know and love (mostly – the baking history section is gone and it took Noel a little while to find his voice) so I’ll at least give it a fair chance. xx

  • That sounds like it’s going to be fun! I’m not much of a cook, but I do love baking for some reason and look forward to following along.
