gobstoppers

Happy Sunday everyone! I’m writing this post from a train on the way to Manchester for a weekend in Berlin with the Chamaleon Theatre. I’m so excited to be in such a great city in a few short hours!

10 Things That Have Made Me Happy Recently

end of september collage

>>> The big doula training weekend that I had been looking forward to for ages came and went and was just as interesting and emotional as I thought it would be.

>>> My mom sent a box of sweeties for me, and costumes and jumpers for Harold. I cried with laughter the first time I saw him in his hotdog costume. And surprisingly, he doesn’t hate it. (His cowboy hat, he’s less enthusiastic about)

>>> Have I mentioned that I’m on my way to Berlin?

>>> I also received this box of American goodies from Kingdom of Sweets to remind me of home. It was such a great gift to get, especially so close to Halloween. Any American kid will know that there was always the hierarchy of halloween candy and it looked something like this:

kingdom of sweets american candy
american candy
gobstoppers
nerds
warheads
God level: Full size anything, even if you didn’t really like that candy bar.

Extremely high: Fun size Snickers, Reeses’s cups, bags of Skittles, Butterfingers, Sour Patch Kids.

Mid-tier: Nerds, Gobstoppers, Twix, Kit-Kat, M&Ms.

Low: American smarties (which are dry and chalk like – sort of like a cross between Parma Violets and Love Hearts here in the UK), candy corn, generic hard candies that you only associated with worryingly untouched bowls from your grandparent’s house, Good & Plenty, and Circus Peanuts.

I highly recommend visiting the Kingdom of Sweets website (plus they give you 10% off your first order).

>>> Season 2 of Doctor Foster was epic. I didn’t really feel satisfied by the ending, but I loved it up until that point. What did you think?

>>> I received a phonemail Vita Coco package, with a bumper load of coconut water in it. I’ve been staying very hydrated this week, for sure! It’s all in honour of London Cocktail week (which ends on Sunday night) so if you’re looking for a way to celebrate this weekend, head down to Hackney to The Natural Philosopher where they will be serving Vita Coco cocktails.

My favourite cocktail to make at home during my coconut water experiments was Alf de Portillo’s Thrilla in Manila cocktail.

To make it at home combine 50mL Vita Coco water, 35 mL Dry Gin, 10 ML Pastis de Marseille, and 2 dashes of orange bitters. Strain the contents into a chilled glass.

I’m excited to be away this weekend, but I wish that I was able to attend!

>>> I had a flying visit to London this week, and it was so nice to be able to meet up with Emma for a drink.

>>> Sam and I went on a date on Wednesday night and we made it to the cinema to see “It”. It was just as creepy as I wanted it to be, and I was really impressed by the child actors. (One of them was from ‘Stranger Things’ and he was brilliant in it!)

>>> I got a haircut with the wonderful Lotte at George Northwood and it felt amazing. I hadn’t had my haircut since the end of March so it great to get some volume and length taken off.

>>> I’ve started filling in my diary (datebook) for 2018 already. Yes, I still use a paper planner/diary but I have to. I can’t deal with an online schedule and losing it would be like losing my arm.

What are you getting up to this weekend?

  • Glad you’ve had a lovely week/month. Doctor Foster was amazing but I do agree with the ending, those sweets look fabulous and I really need a picture of your dog in a hot dog costume to grace my life!

    • I hope they don’t make a third series of Doctor Foster (a heard that they won’t, thankfully!)

I posted some Harold hot dog photos on the Rhyme & Ribbons Facebook page a few days ago xx

  • Yes, we would like a picture of Harold as a hot dog!

I think you’ve got the hierarchy spot on! There was only one house in our neighborhood that did full size candy bars, so it was always the first place we went. Circus peanuts & candy corn were the worst. However, I do love Smarties; I think I am the only person I know who does! I always make my dad send them over. By the way, I spotted Reese’s pumpkins in Tesco today if you are a fan of them!

    • I need to get some Reese’s pumpkins immediately! I know how you feel likening a candy a lot of people don’t- mine is Tootsie Rolls- I don’t know why but I like them!

Haha I posted some Harold hot dog photos on the Rhyme & Ribbons Facebook page a few days ago xx

I used to get friends and family to send me sweets from the USA. It’s the sour ones like Nerds, Lady Taffy, jolly ranchers, and such. Now you can get Nerds in a lot of places here and postage has gotten very expensive in recent years. Enjoy!

    • Very true- I think our local Tesco does them. I love jolly ranchers- my mom always sends me some with birthday/Christmas gifts! X

  • Love that Kingdom of Sweets goodie box! I have such a sweet tooth, it’s not even funny. Hope you enjoy every last bite!

I am seriously loving your feed at the moment Amanda! It is quite literally Autumnal goals. Hope you are having a great time in Berlin x

  • I still use a paper diary too – more reliable and just nicer to fill in, I think. We were in London this week to see Ricky Gervais who was fantastic. The weekend was supposed to be fairly low-key. Mr P had band practice at ours on Friday which culminated in five bottles of wine and half a bottle of honey JD being put away by the three of us that weren’t driving meaning Saturday, bar a dog walk, was a bit of a write-off. Have a great time in Berlin – looking forward to hearing all about it! x

  • The second season of Doctor Foster was stressful so I stopped watching. I couldn’t understand why she was making so many bad decisions!

  • Your week sounds like so much fun! I am quite jealous about the box of Vita Coco! Have a great time in Berlin! I was there just a couple of weeks ago and loved it there. This week I’ve been loving the work I do and loving the long relaxed weekend with some yoga!! πŸ™‚

  • It was so, so good to see you! xx

  • WHAT THE DUCK IS A BUTTER FINGER? Is it fudgey?

    • Oh my Christ- I’ve no idea how to describe it- not fudgey at all- but the inside is like crisp, hard buttery layers of peanut butter. It’s a bit sickly but so good! X

    • It’s crunchy and amazing <3

  • AMERICAN HALLOWEEN CANDY GOALS!!! And I like that you’re balancing it out with the coconut water πŸ˜‰ Have an amazing time in Berlin! Have you been before? I am considering a trip in November so I’m interested to hear about your time there!

    • I’m home from Berlin now and missing it already. I have been before- I love it! I highly recommend it if you can! X

  • Wow check out the american candy haul! I’d love to try a load of these! Also, there seems to be enough coconut water there to last you a lifetime! What a lovely hamper to receive! I would like a full post on Harold’s outfits please! Alice xxx

    • It’s almost embarrassing how much of a dent that I made in that coconut water – I must be one of the most hydrated people around! πŸ˜‰ xx

  • Aaah the everlasting gobstoppers made me so happy to see – all the charlie and the chocolate factory love! I missed all the Dr Foster series and really feel i need to watch it, as everyone is raving about it, but i kinda feel i know all about it from Gogglebox πŸ˜›

    Bumble & Be

    • Gogglebox definitely showed some of the best parts which is incredibly disappointing – but especially the first series and the first episode of the second is well worth a watch! x
