Outfitting || Wishing for Spring

It’s this time of year when I always hit peak winter burnout. The holidays are now a distant memory and spring’s earliest flowers: snowdrops, daffodils, tulips and crocuses are all starting to peek up out of the ground. The light is lasting longer in the evening and it should be spring.

But it’s not. The weather is still as freezing, sleet-prone and grey as it was in the depths of January. The only thing that really gets me through February is knowing that by the end of the month, we’ll have 2 full hours of daylight more than when we started the month. It’s the little things you know?

Growing up in the arid climate of New Mexico (it does get snow, to many people’s surprise) by the time that the beginning of March rolls around, it’s not unusual to have an average temperate of 17 C (62 F). Putting aside the fact that that’s the average temperature for the summer in York (weeps silently), I just can’t shake off the pattern that I grew up with. That this is the time of year when you start packing away all your heavy winter clothing and pull out all your light and airy spring and summer clothing.

So I have a nonsensical tradition. Every year during the first week in March, I pack away my heavy winter things. It’s an absolutely foolish idea as every year Sam scoffs and tells me I’m being ridiculous, and nearly every year I cave in and end up pulling out a few of the jumpers and coats that I’ve presumptively packed away. Despite my many years of winter and spring in the UK, I still do it because my soul needs it.

I think part of my subconscious is trying to will warm weather into existence. The power of positive thinking and all that. The jury is still out on if positive thinking can help control the weather but I’m not giving up hope. Also as a winter-loather, it does me good to be rid of my thickest scarves and socks, even if I’m then sitting shivering at work.

Which brings us to this beautiful Cos dress. It’s thoroughly weather inappropriate but I needed to get it out of spring/summer storage and wear it. I just needed to. One of the reasons why I love this oversize dress so much is that it makes me feel like a fancy librarian (the elbow pads definitely help) so I pulled out my trusty Cambridge Satchel (which was a birthday present from Sam a good 6 years ago) to complete the look.

But don’t let these photos fool you – yes I picked the warmest day so far this year to snap these photos but I was freezing. I just didn’t want to subject my blog to any more photos of lovely dresses buried underneath layers of jumpers and winter clothing.

I was cold and it was worth it.

Are you dreaming about spring weather and a different wardrobe already, or do you think I’m being far too impatient?
