The Flea Market at Mauerpark is the place to be in Berlin every Sunday. I’m a massive lover of a good market. That’s probably why I have so many blog posts devoted to London’s iconic markets: Columbia Road, Borough, Portobello Road, Maltby. And of all of those markets that you might be familiar with Mauerpark is probably most similar to Portobello Road Market whilst still being uniquely “Berlin”.

Mauerpark translates to “wall park” referring to its location as a former part of the Berlin Wall and its Death Strip. The park is located at the border of Prenzlauer Berg and Gesundbrunnen district of former West Berlin.

You can find everything from coffee trucks, to vegan food, to vintage home goods to local artisan products. I read an article once that summarised the goods at Mauerpark as ” trumpery and rummage” and I’d never heard that before and now absolutely love it!

It hadn’t kicked in yet for my latest visit to Berlin because the weather wasn’t quite nice enough yet but from late spring to early autumn, there’s karoke at the market every Sunday afternoon in the amphitheatre at 3pm. Apparently, if the crowd loves you they’ll clap and sing along, but maybe it’s worth having thick skin before you leap up because I’ve heard that if they don’t love you, be prepared to be booed!

It’s a bit of a journey out from the centre of Berlin where all the tourist hotspot tend to be, but it’s definitely worth the metro ride. And trust me, the flea market will be stuffed with locals and tourists alike! You might end up finding a lot of treasures that you insist on taking home, but luckily if there’s no room in your luggage, you can probably find a new suitcase at Mauerpark for your treasures. I definitely had to refrain from buying some really interesting vintage cocktail glasses; I convinced myself that they’d never make it make to England in one piece. And I’d do almost anything to avoid checking in a bag on either EasyJet or RyanAir.

My advice is that once you’ve finished looking at the market, walk up the big hill in the park to where there are some swings and benches because the views are absolutely fantastic. (If you’re lucky enough to nab a seat!) I also advise going fairly early in the morning if you don’t like crowds as the market can get very busy, especially in nice weather. It’s also a great place to go for a picnic with some excellent people watching!

The flea market at Mauerpark is located at Gleimstraße 55, 10437 Berlin. The market is on from 9 am – 6pm on Sundays.
