Salami & Co: A Sausage Dog Cafe

Now that I’m back in York and settled in for regularly scheduled content (as opposed to scheduled days in advance content that I did when I was traveling), I can share with you some posts that I’ve been excited to write for a while. Because I’ve traveled so much over the past month, I’ve only really spent about a week and a half in the new house, and Sam has been traveling loads for work, so he’s only spent a little bit more than I have. And poor Harold’s been carted around here, there and yonder.

It’s pretty safe to say that none of us feel quite settled yet (and we have some more traveling at the end of May so we probably won’t until June), but for Sam and I, I don’t feel bad about. Little Harold, I do. I think about that little guy ALL the time, and I have his comfort and happiness at the back of my mind in nearly every decision that I’ve made lately. I can tell that the move and the travel have made him quite anxious so I’m very keen for him to settle in to his new home.

So it’s been treats galore for our wee beasty.

Including a trip to a special sausage dog cafe. You’re probably thinking to yourselves, there’s no way that they actually drove half an hour to take Harold to a dog cafe. And reader, you’d be wrong because we absolutely did.

Salami & Co in Otley serves up super tasty food for humans, alongside (what I could only assume was) super tasty food for dogs. The owners have their own little sausage, Salami. And they wanted to create a space that dogs were not only welcomed in, but positively encouraged.

All dogs can go to Salami and Co (not just sausage dogs) but as the design is modeled off of their own little guy, I knew it was where I wanted to take Harold. The decor was lovely. Light and airy with the comfort of both two-legged and four-legged friends in mind. There were towels, bowls and fluffy dog mats for the little guys, and Harold loved his sit on his mat.

The main reason we came all this way was that I wanted to see Harold drink a puppuccino (basically just frothy milk). From the way Harold reacts to stealing drinks of tea, and liking spills around the house I knew he’d love it. (I also know that he has a sweet tooth.) And from the dog menu, there’s a huge variety of snacks. From “pup” cakes, to venison sausages, to biscuits to dog donuts. For Harold we settled on the puppuccino and a pupcake. The cake was gluten-free cake made with carob and applesauce with venison sausage sprinkles on top.

Predictably, Harold went absolutely crazy for his puppuccino. Sam had him on his knee so that I could get a picture of the little dude with his drink, but he started drinking it so enthusiastically, he ended up having to go on the floor. And once he’d finished it, he stuck his little snout in as far as it could go to lick up any droplets that he missed. When I first set the cake down, he was a bit unsure of it and tentatively gave it a lick. What he tasted must have been delightful because in a literal blink of an eye he gobbled the whole thing up. Watching him hoover down his sausage sprinkles was amazing.

The human food was beautifully presented! Sam and I split some avocado toast (with him eating the poached egg) and it was perfectly balanced flavour-wise and stunning to look at. And Sam’s poached egg was perfectly runny. I was really impressed by how much care went in to the food, and you can tell that this venture really is the owners’ pride and joy.

I went to Salami and Co for the novelty, but I’d 100% go back again another day with Harold in tow.
