vegetarian burger

The last time I was with the group of lovely women who also review the Chamaeleon shows with me, we decided that we’d all go out for dinner. We can be a difficult group to all agree on a meal for because we have two vegans, someone who is gluten-free and a low FODMAP eater amongst the 6 of us. But we decided to persist with our plans for a group meal. Someone suggested Shiso and we all quite excitedly and readily agreed.

Shiso is a burger place in Berlin that focuses on Asian-style burgers. So you can get a hearty Angus patty, but it will be on something more similar to a bao bun than a hamburger bun.

For starters we all shared a few baskets of hot and salty edamame beans. They were snaffled down quite quickly and were thoroughly enjoyed by all. The burgers don’t come with sides, so we also ordered two baskets of sweet potato chips to share on the table. The sweet potato chips were absolutely delicious.

I had the veggie burger which had tofu, grilled aubergine, ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes and red onion. The tofu had been marinated in some sort of teriyaki like sauce and it was absolutely amazing. I’m usually not a huge aubergine fan, but here it worked out right and I gobbled it down. But my favourite thing about the meal was the bun. It was so light and airy and wasn’t stodgy in the slightest. It was so delightful. This was definitely one of my favourite ever vegan burgers.

I didn’t have it (obviously) but a few of the ladies had the Shiso burger, the dish that the restaurant is most famous for. It’s a piece of marinated tuna, with shiso leaf, lettuce, red onion, coriander, chili mayo and teriyaki sauce. Everyone who had that unanimously agreed that it was delicious so I’ll just have to take their word on that.

We also shared a bottle of white wine between four of us, so with wine, starters, side and a burger it came to around 17€ each, which is pretty good value for a group meal with drinks.

If you are looking for a fairly quick, but delicious bite to eat that caters towards most dietary requirements, I heartily recommend Shiso. I’ll definitely be back again the future and after telling Sam about it, he really wants to try the Shiso burger for himself.

Shiso was very busy when we arrived, especially as we were a larger group, so we had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. The restaurant is very small, so there aren’t a lot of seating options, but the tables seemed to turn around quite quickly.

Shiso is located at Auguststraße 29C, 10119 Berlin.
