Celebrating Ostara

This week is Ostara (on the 20th to be precise). March is always a time of fairly extreme transition in England, and the weather this March has certainly been worse than February was. However, I love March because it always fills me with such hope that spring will arrive imminently. Ostara is the spring equinox; it’s a day of balance and there is the same amount of light as there is darkness in the day.

A brief bit of background:

Eostra is the Anglo-Saxon goddess associated with the coming dawn and the warming of the earth for spring. So the day is all about fertility and growth; new beginnings and love. You can heavily see the overlap with Easter, particularly with the emphasis on the decor; dyeing eggs, decorating with bunnies and chicks.

Celebrating:

Plant a few seedlings. If the weather is still awful outside, you can plant a few inside to grow on a windowsill and plant out later.

Meditate on the changing seasons.

It might not be warm yet, but you can still go outside and soak up a few rays of sun (cloud cover permitting).

Light a floral scented candle.

Include seeds, leafy greens (like nettles and dandelions) into your meal for the day.

Take a really long walk. Preferably with your shoes off, even if shoes off just for a few minutes to feel the earth beneath your feet.

Clean your home, and open the windows to get some fresh air in.

If you want to mark the occasion with the use of essential oils throughout the day, I’d focus on lemon, lavender and rosemary. (Of course, always check if the essential oil you are using is safe for pets – not all are!)

Some crystals that you might be interested in using and helping you focus are amethyst, jasper, aquamarine, rose quartz and moonstone.

Will you be marking the day in any way? What are you excited about in terms of the upcoming spring?
