Manda’s Favourite Travel Eats

Tonight I leave for Paris for a few days to rendezvous with my best friend and her family for a few days, and I am over the moon about it! But never fear,  I still have some posts queued up for your reading enjoyment for the rest of the week.

Today I’d like to introduce you to Manda from MusicalPoem. She’s been one of my featured sponsors this month and she’s taking over my blog today.  So here’s Manda with her favourite travel eats!

My Favorite Travel Eats
When my aunt informed me she and my uncle were planning a trip to London and Paris, I almost immediately launched into a laundry list of food they absolutely had to try while in Europe. “Fish and chips in London, of course, and bakewell tarts and a classic English breakfast,” I gushed. “And in Paris? Macarons, chocolate croissants, freshly made baguettes…”

She laughed and said, “It’s funny how every time you talk about the many places you’ve been to, you almost always start with food.”

She’s right, of course. So many of my favorite travel memories are tied to food, to the point where certain dishes are associated with certain locations of the world in my mind! Sometimes I even try recreating some of my favorite travel eats at home. While I’m not always successful with what I’m able to recreate, here are some of the dishes I’ve loved in my travels:

Spaetzle in Germany: Potatoes and noodles combined into one thing? SOLD. I had the good fortune of tasting homemade spaetzle, or potato noodles, when I was in Germany and it was truly life changing. Served next to some schnitzel and sauerkraut, spaetzle is one of my favorite types of noodle.

Fish Chowder in Ireland: Perhaps it’s because the coast is so accessible for most of the Irish, but the fish chowder I had in all of the Irish towns I visited when roadtripping along the countryside was magnificent. Rich, flavorful and positively loaded with huge chunks of different kinds of fish, I had this almost every day in Ireland and missed it dearly once I left.

Dumplings in China: I love dumplings in all forms (gnocchi, pierogi, empanadas, etc) but Chinese dumplings will always be first in my dumpling loving heart. Steamed, fried, boiled — it doesn’t matter how they’re cooked, I will never turn a plate of them down. Steamed is best in the mornings, I find, unless there’s a hangover involved as then the only answer is fried!

Meat pies in Australia: I’m not the biggest fan of meat pies in most situations, but the Aussies can do them like no other. Served piping hot with a side of tomato sauce for dipping, a meat pie is just the ticket for a tasty lunch Down Under. There’s an Australian-owned meat pie chain that’s in NYC and I’m desperately hoping it’ll make its way down to DC!

Poutine in Canada: French fries, gravy and cheese curds. What’s not to love?! I may or may or may not have swooned upon my first bite of poutine when I visited Toronto. I wish that there was poutine as readily available in the States as in Canada; this is a GREAT drunk/hangover food that I could totally see taking off outside of Canada.
