Travel ||10 Things to Do in Fuerteventura

waves breaking

I came to Fuerteventura having not read much about it. Which is an extremely rare thing as I usually research a place to death before I visit. But this press trip really crept up on me, and what with it being so close to the holidays, I decided to let the destination surprise me.

And I’m so glad that I did. There was far more to do than I expected, natural beauty and outdoor activities were a much larger portion of the things to do than I ever would have thought and it was less built up than I had assumed it would be.

1. Go on an adventure with Mehari Experience. The company does excursions around the island. We rode around in jeeps, rode camels, visited the natural sand dunes, climbed volcanoes, fed chipmunks, feasted, and went sightseeing with the wonderful guides from Mehari.

I couldn’t recommend them more highly. It was such a fantastic day out and a really great way to explore the island. It’s definitely one of the most memorable things we did during my time in Fuerteventura; especially getting to stroke a chipmunk!

2. Go surfing with the Fuerteventura Surf School.

Our instructors were so lovely, skilled and helpful. They also were great at cracking jokes and putting us at ease, which helped loads in not feeling embarrassed. (And they had abs for days.)

We all did their 1 day 4 hour beginner course, which retails at an extraordinarily reasonable 45€. I honestly thought it was going to cost miles more than that!

3.  Hit the beach. Some stunning streches of white sand lay just south of Corralejo. And as Fuerteventura is just 100 km off of the coast of Africa, you’ll most likely get some sun as well. (Whereas it’s proximity to Spain is 1,350 km)

4.  Have drinks at the Sunset Lounge.

Their cocktail selection is so much fun and it’s only about a few minutes walk from the Suite Hotel Atlantis Fuerteventura Resort.

5.  If you have time, you can take a day-trip to Lanzorate! It’s only about 15 minutes away from Fuerteventura by boat.

6. Visit the Museum of Cheese Majorero.

Goat’s cheese is a staple dish in the area, so you can visit to learn not only about its history and how to make it, but more about the history of the local area. When you visit the museum, you also visit the Cactus and Succulent Botanical Garden, and the Antigua Mill.

7.  There are some amazing natural landscapes in Fuerteventura. The Coves of Ajuy were formed of volanic rock. They are in the west of the island and they go back 70 million years. (They are the oldest rock formations anywhere in the Canaries).

8. If (unlike me) you eat seafood, then Fuerteventura is the place for you. And you need to go to El Cotillo for it. The old fishing village cum surfer’s paradise is a prime spot on the island for eating the freshest catch of the day.

9. Take a boat to Isla de Lobos from Corralejo. There are rare birds to spot, and an old lighthouse to take photos of, stunning beaches, and you can walk around the whole little island in a few hours.

Lobos means wolves (and it’s also the name of the University of New Mexico sports team which is why you’ll find Lobos stuff all over Albuquerque.) But you won’t find any wolves here. Just sea wolves aka monk seals.

10.  Have lunch and cocktails at the absolutely incredible Gran Hotel Atlantis Bahai Real. If you are headed over there, my vote is to go for tapas and drinks at the Coco Bahía Lounge & Club.

It’s built out over the water so the waves lap right up to you. It’s one of the most stunning venues that I’ve ever had the opportunity to dine and drink at.

They also have the most beautiful spa that we were able to visit whilst we were in Fuerteventura. It’s a sister hotel to Suite Hotel Atlantis and you can tell that some touches are similar though the Gran is a bit more luxe.
