Crafting || At Home Clay

It seems like everyone started a new hobby during the lockdown period; baking, sourdough starters, macrame, drawing. Maybe because I was a secret super-fan of the Great British Pottery Throwdown, I decided to try my hand at clay.

And dear readers, I am not good at it. But that’s absolutely fine because I had oodles of fun making all my little pinch pots. And there’s always the chance for improvement, of course.

I received the Make Your Own Pottery Kit from London Wildflower (£30). The kit contained air dry clay (500g), a potters pin tool, a ribbon tool, a wire cutter tool, a small rolling pin, paintbrush, sandpaper, sponge, wooden board, and instruction booklet.

What I loved most was their clay: it is soft and easy to work with, being very (apparently, it is similar in texture to kiln-cured clay due to it’s mineral composition). The clay is non-toxic and contains small fibres within it which help strengthen what you make when it is dry. The clay dries naturally within 24-72 hours depending on the size of the project, with no kiln or oven heating required. Because I made small pots, mine were thoroughly dry in about 24 hours.

I had the most fun using the wire cutter tool and the rolling pin. I tried to use some of potters tool to poke a lacey pattern, but I ended up abandoning that. I have my own set of acrylic paints that I used for painting my little pots.

Nikki Paul founded London Wildflower and runs a wide range of classes. I’d definitely recommend taking a look at the Online Pottery Classes. What a great way to safely learn some pottery skills whilst social distancing, or if you aren’t able to travel to London in the future for a variety of reasons.

London Wildflower is giving away a pottery kit to one lucky reader. What a great summer project for someone else.

What would you make with your pottery kit?
