New Year Hopes and Reflections on the Past Year

Here’s a gross secret: I am actually one of those people who really love New Year’s Eve. I don’t find it tacky or disappointing in the slightest. I am a night owl by nature, so I love everyone else being up with me. And bubbles and wearing something supremely extra. So this year I was on Cloud 9 that I got to ring in the New Year with my love in my favourite city on the planet. (Edinburgh). But we are now safely ensconced in a brand new year. So much so that it’s probably time to stop signing off emails with “Happy 2022!” I haven’t had the space or time to reflect here yet. Last year dawned with still utter uncertainty about COVID. I was hopeful about 2021 and then restriction followed after restriction. 2021 was not such a normal year after all.

I still haven’t seen most of my family – with some it is going on 5 years now – and I’ve yet to be to an event that wasn’t either canceled due to COVID or I lived in a constant state of paranoia and anxiety that it would be canceled. But alas, COVID did enter my household and the new year dawns with the virus in my home. But I am remaining optimistic. Thank goodness I’ve already had my booster jab.

So here are some things that I have to look forward to in 2022:

Hopefully, a trip to the USA to see family and friends.

Finishing my 3rd year of teaching.

Hopefully seeing Jessie Buckley and Eddie Redmayne in ‘Cabaret’. I was due to go before Christmas but the performance was canceled due to COVID and all the remaining tickets are out of my price range. Fingers crossed that the theatre sorts out an option for the other people in my shows.

But regardless, I have tickets to the newest Punchdrunk Show, ‘Moulin Rouge’, Cyrano de Begerac as well as several music gig tickets.

The boyfriend turns 30 this year to plans that I’m keeping everything crossed won’t change.

I want this to be my year of not saving my “nice” things till a later date. To burn my expensive candles, and wear my nicest underwear. To drink the special bottle of wine and to really live my life again.

I’m also hoping to squeeze in a Scottish roadtrip and to finish the NC500.

I’m setting my reading goal to 75 again this year and I want to indulge in books that I love and not just books I read because they are “worthy”.

What are you looking forward to this year?
