Outfitting || Cream Maxi Dress

I never used to be a fan of the maxi/midi dress. I was convinced that they wouldn’t suit me and that I’d just look incredibly frumpy. But as my favourite shopping purchase last year was an autumnal & Other Stories maxi dress, I decided that it was time to add one to my summer wardrobe. In stepped this gorgeous number.

I fell in love with it online and couldn’t wait for the parcel to arrive on my front doorstep. I was like a kid at Christmas. I was like me at Christmas. I ripped it open, threw it on and there wasn’t a single doubt in my head that I was going to keep the dress. It fit like a glove, suited me and was so, so comfortable. (The only change that I’m going to make to it is to add a popper so that it buttons a tiny bit higher. If I had to bend down to pick anything up, I would flash everyone.) Though, I still had to ask my customary maxi dress question of: does this make me look like a character from “Little House on the Prairie”?

I’m fully on board with longer dresses these days with the added benefit that they totally offer more freedom of movement. I can chase Harold through the park, lay down in the grass and throw myself around with few restrictions. It’s basically like being in pyjamas. And this maxi dress is linen. It was my first ever linen clothing purchase and I’m an absolute convert. I get funny about how the texture of clothing feels and I’ve been known to return things just because I don’t like how they feel on my skin. But the linen feels so airy, breathable and soft. Plus, as someone who doesn’t own an iron and relies on steamy showers and hair-dryers to get rid of the worst dress wrinkles, the fact that linen is supposed to look wrinkled and lived in suits me perfectly.

I got a haircut in early May and the length in these photos is my ideal length. Shorter doesn’t quite suit me as well and longer starts looking a bit sloppy (because the in between lob and collarbone length chic hair cut is such an awkward length).

I took these photos in our local allotments which are one of the most picturesque places in York to relax. On a sunny day they are awash with gardeners gently pruning, the buzzing of bumble bees, the laughter of children finding early fruit to eat, and the scents of honeysuckle. I added Sam and myself to the allotment waiting list the week that we moved to York and we are still waiting. Free allotments hardly ever come up. And you can see why. They are an absolute oasis. Hopefully an allotment of our own will be in our near future. Though Harold would have to stay at home as he would run rampant there.
