gisborough hall hotel

Way back when we celebrated my 30th, Sam planned a surprise filled weekend at the Gisborough Hall Hotel. Gisborough Hall is a former family manor built in the 1500s and was a private home all the way until the second world war. After the war it was leased to the council as a care home, and then in 2000 the hall was turned into a hotel. Some of the rooms are more modern (in the new extension) but if you book into the main part of the house, a lot of the period features are kept in the room, which I really loved. In particular, we had incredible Victorian windows that I was absolutely terrified of opening (and breaking).

It’s nestled on the edge of the North York Moors in beautiful countryside, but it’s also very, very close to the sea-side with Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Staithes and Whitby just a short drive away.

The house has a history of having several ghosts, but I can say that I did not experience any ghostly apparitions the weekend that we were there. Though I wish I had seen a ghost! But what we lacked in ghosts, we made up for in mist and rain so it was a very atmospheric visit.

The entire reason Sam booked the hotel was because of the special room with a roll-top bath in the room. Sam knows that I am a huge fan of a bath and that celebrating my birthday with long relaxation sessions would be ideal. He happened to buy me a lot of Lush bathbombs as gifts as well, so I ended up taking about 2 baths per day that weekend. I brought Ruby Tandoh’s “Eat Up!” with me that weekend, and I ended up reading nearly the entirety of it in the bath.

Sam had warned the hotel that we were there for my birthday, and they surprised me by leaving some pastries and sweets in the room when we checked in. The rooms are also all armed with decanters of sherry for a pre-bed drink which is a lovely touch. (Even though I don’t drink sherry.) One evening we ate dinner at the Chaloner’s Restaurant in the Hotel and it was lovely. I sometimes fear restaurants in hotels but this one was absolutely delicious. Breakfast was served every morning downstairs and it was bountiful and tasty.

The staff in the hotel was absolutely lovely and the only thing that I can fault the hotel for during our entire stay was that our room was not ready when we arrived to check in. Otherwise it was a flawless stay.

I’d kill for a bath like that in my home. How about you?

*** We paid to the visit to the hotel, and I just thought you’d enjoy an un-sponsored review.***
