Home || Preparing for cooler weather

The theme for this month’s Studio collaboration is: cooler weather. And for me it was a no brainer – I wanted to focus on adding a bit of hygge to my home; particularly the living room as it’s where Sam, Harold and I spend most of our time.

Hygge is a term that exploded on the blogosphere a few years ago and still lingers today (though now some view it as cliche and overused). But me? I’m still worshipping at the alter of hygge and lagom. If you haven’t encountered it before, hygge is all things cosy. To take a definition straight from the VisitDenmark site: “hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people”.

So that’s how I focused on this month’s collaboration.

For me, scent plays a huge part in creating a warm and cosy atmosphere, so I snapped up the Rose and Black Pepper candle with cloche. I love the way that just one whiff of a scent can instantly transport your elsewhere. Scent is so tied to memory and to me autumn always smells spicy and earthy. My candle hasn’t arrived yet, but I can’t wait to light it up and curl up on the sofa with a hot chocolate. (Random fact: the Danes are Europe’s largest consumer of candles. They burn on average 13 lbs of candles per person, per year.)

We spend more time sitting on our sofa than pretty much anywhere else in the house, so I wanted to give it a quick makeover to make it more warm and inviting. First off, I swapped our old throw for this gorgeous Agnes Throw in ochre (the pop of mustard colour) for added interest. I love trying to subtly work in warmer shades in the autumn and winter, whilst having cooler ones around in the spring and summer. The throw has a mohair feel and is very lovely and snuggly.

To complement the throw, I paired it with two Brompton Velvet Cushions again in a lovely mustardy shade of ochre. Velvet is such a luxe fabric that shouts cooler weather at me, so I couldn’t resist them. I also loved their studded detailing. Harold loves to make cushions his own (he loves sleeping on a cushion) so hopefully they’ll withstand the constant love and attention of a tiny sausage dog.

We’ve never spent the colder months in this house, since we moved in at the beginning of May, but I’m looking forward to seeing how it holds up to the cold. There are still some more things that we need to do around the house before a proper cold snap sets in. We really need to get our curtains hung in the spare room. We have the curtains we just keep forgetting to buy and measure a curtain rail. That’s top of the to-do list. I’d also like to have a bit of an autumn clean and get rid of a few things. But other than that, dare I say it? I think we might be ready for the cold. (House-wise that is, I’m never ready for the cold.)
