When Sam and I visited Atlanta in the autumn, we did something that I had never done in my 4 years of living in Atlanta. Go to the World of Coca-Cola. It’s something that every person who lives there jokes about, and then saves for out-of-town-guest activities. And then probably ends up going way too often. But somehow, I never ended up having a guest that was interested so my time in Atlanta came and went without me ever having experienced it.

So when we were there for my friend’s wedding, I knew that it had to be on the top of our tourist day activities (alongside going to CNN which I had done before).

And I am so glad we ended up going. It turned out to be one of Sam’s favourite activities that we did in America. Mostly because it was so American and it was so strange but well-put together. It was the ultimate consumer activity but learning about the history of Coca-Cola and all it’s advertisements was actually really, really fascinating.

I’m ashamed and embarrassed to admit, that I even teared up at one video of people explaining want Coca-Cola means to them (their childhood/life associations with the drink and the happy memories it reminds them of).

But undoubtedly, the most famous parts of the World of Coca-Cola is the Taste It! room. In that room there are over 100 different fountain soda stations and you are free to help yourself and try different Coca-Cola products from all around the world. Some are absolutely delicious (like Sparletta Sparberry, a raspberry cream soda flavour from Southern Africa) and then some are not going to be to your tastes in the slightest. I can’t remember where it was from but there was a mint-toothepastey tasting beverage that made me shudder.

It’s a slightly expensive tourist activity, though it’s cheaper than the Georgia Aquarium which is right near by. However, it was definitely a goofy and memorable day out. I’m not sure that I’d ever go back again, but I am so glad that I at least went once.

The World of Coca-Cola is located at 121 Baker St NW, Atlanta, GA 30313, USA.

Adult tickets are $17.
