I blogged about how the new year is a a great time to spruce up your home. I know that a spring clean is perhaps the more traditional time, but I find the deep winter the perfect time.

After the holidays, your home often needs quite a good deep clean and I find it very therapeutic to metaphorically and literally sweep out the cobwebs of the old year. Plus, houses undoubtedly got a bit messy over the holidays or normally housework was pushed aside to indulge in night’s out and festive activities.

It’s also a great time of year to declutter the home. Especially if you’ve gotten some lovely new things for Christmas that you want to make room for. Or perhaps you’ve nabbed something spectacular in the post-Christmas sales, or just want to clear out anything that’s a bit drab.

I’m definitely in the market for a new sofa. My current one is a bit grim. But unfortunately, I seem to have really expensive tastes, and nothing that I like is immediately affordable. And I’d rather save up for a piece that I really love than waste money compromising on something that I don’t.

So in the meantime, I’m sprucing up my living room for 2020 with this new cocktail chair from Sloane & Sons. This Melina Velvet Cocktail Chair is currently on sale, £175 down from £249, with free delivery as well. I love the retro look of this chair. There’s something that feels very Art Deco about a velvet cocktail chair – something very Gatsby-esque. (Though the cocoktail chair itself hit it’s peak in the 1950s.) And since we’ve just entered the roaring 20s, I thought it was a very appropriate addition to the home.

The cocktail chair was 2018s “It” chair but I’ve always been a bit behind the trends. The chair was always designed to be significantly smaller than an armchair, yet more glamorous than a dining room chair. It’s a chair that is a bit whimsical and fun, without taking up much space. Cocktail chairs traditionally have tapered legs and slightly curved backs that ‘hug’ you as you recline.

The chair was delivered in a very secure and safe fashion, and Harold had a brilliant time having a romp in the massive box it was delivered in. Assembly was very minimal: I just had to screw on the legs to the chair. The directions were simple enough that even I could follow them.

The chair is such a luscious emerald colour (my birth stone) and I couldn’t resist adding it as a pop of colour to my reasonably minimal space. Everything else in the room is muted greys, whites and blacks. The chair also comes in several other gorgeous shades: mustard and red.

They also have some really gorgeous Wingback Chairs, and I love the velvet Accent Chairs as well.

Sloane & Sons focuses on making beautiful chairs manufactured in the UK. Customer service from them has been impeccable and the in-house and upholstery teams are still trained by the Sloane family directly. I love the genuine family nature of the brand, and supporting smaller businesses.

All of their chairs come with a 12 month guarantee.

Are you planning to spruce up your home in any way for the new year?
