A Life Update || Finishing my PGCE

It seems like only last month that I wrote my post back in September about starting my PGCE program. (You can always go back and read that post here.)

On Friday, I passed my course and was awarded on Outstanding overall for my teaching practices. I now have achieved my QTS from the Department for Education. I also found out that my last assignment earned me my highest marks so far in the course. I had a great time wild swimming in the sun, having a picnic, and drinking fizz to celebrate.

Next year I will be teaching English and Drama. I’ll be relocating back down South, and it definitely feels odd to be leaving the North after moving to York in 2016.

It was certainly not the year that I was expecting. But then again, it was not the year that any of us were expecting. My second placement was pulled in the middle due to COVID19, so none of the trainee teachers this year received as much classroom time as usual. Instead, we transitioned to virtual learning with schools and universities, with some of us still volunteering in schools and tutoring students.

It’s slightly daunting to be heading into a career change in my early-30s but it feels utterly right. I can’t wait to be in the classroom next year, to have my own space and to start my NQT (Newly Qualified Teacher) year. Who knows how much classroom time will be occurring as per usual next year with the potential that some online learning might still be happening. But whatever happens, I’m excited for this next venture.

Have any of your changed careers before?
