I was utterly delighted to be invited to Penhaligon’s Cambridge branch to undergo a new fragrance profiling and smell some delightful offerings. It had been almost 2 years since my last visit to the Penhaligon’s in Leeds, where I was absolutely enthralled by the Portraits collection, and left with one of my favourite perfumes, Duchess Rose.

You can pop into any Penhaligon’s shop and get a fragrance profile. It takes in your likes, where and when you’d be wearing your scent, and your personal scent preferences and gives you recommendations based on your results. If you don’t have a store near you, you can also head to the Penhaligon’s website and go through the fragrance profiler online.

I narrowed my choices down through a blind scent testing to my two favourites: both of which happened to be from the Portraits Collection. Clandestine Clara and Changing Constance. In the end, Changing Constance won out.

A moment to pause here and once again admire the Portraits Collection. I love it’s whimsical bottling and the intricacy of the backstory. And I absolutely adore the box packaging and artwork created by the artist, Kristjana S Williams. I’d gladly order a print, if that was an option!

Changing Constance is described as “Constance is what one might call A Very Modern Woman. She has no regard for custom, and does exactly as she likes. Cool cardamom, hot pimento, salted caramel – her contrary perfume breaks every rule.”

If you have someone else you might be buying for, my favourite more masculine scents were: The Tragedy of Lord George, Endymion, The Blazing Mr Sam, and Sartorial.

If you are looking for something new, Penhaligon’s just recently launched The Favourite. It’s a musk and iris scent; inspired by Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, recently the subject of the movie ‘The Favourite’.

In a nod to sustainability that I was very much a fan of, Penhaligon’s asks if you would like your product boxed up in it’s admittedly beautiful gift box and paper. I chose not to, and I’m glad that I was offered the choice.

Once again I cannot fault a visit to Penhaligon’s. The staff were so knowledgeable, warm and engaging. It’s a shopping trip that truly feels luxurious with top-notch customer service.

I know that this won’t be the last time that I visit.
