Hayfever Tea

A homebrewed remedy to help you combat hayfever (seasonal allergies). This recipe is coming a bit late this year since everyone’s seasonal allergies have hopefully come to an end – but I wanted to share a recipe that helped get me through the season. This summer just gone was one of the worst hayfever seasons for me that I can remember. In full disclosure, I don’t just take natural remedies – I combine prescriptions with remedies and homeopathy.

My normal hayfever regime is to take a prescription hayfever tablet every night before bed. In the morning, I clear my nasal passages with Sterimar and have a hayfever nasal spray and eyedrops that I use when needed. But it was so bad this year that all of this wasn’t making enough of a difference. My nose and eyes were constantly streaming. I was in a great deal of discomfort. So I added in a half teaspoon of local honey with added bee pollen every morning before breakfast. I also started taking a dose of histaminum hyrdochoricum (a homeopathic remedy) every day.

All of this really started to help, but then I brewed a hayfever tea for the days that I really needed a extra boost.

Hayfever Tea

Take the a couple of leaves of Plantain and Nettle (fresh or dried), and a 50p-sized piece of fresh elderflowers and place in a small tea pot or a mug.

Cover in freshly boiled water and cover with teapot lid… or…. a small saucer over the mug for 5-10 minutes. This keeps all the lovely fragrant compounds in the infusion so that they do not evaporate away. I brew mine with sliced lemon but that is just for taste.

Drink as needed, 3-4 times a day.

Would you ever try to make your own hayfever tea?
