How I Use Crystals

Throughout my life, I have been somewhat cynical. I like to question most things, and I’m a big proponent of learning by doing and experiencing and I have traditionally taken few beliefs for granted. But for the past few years, I felt something loosen in me around my cynicism and I’ve opened myself up to a few things that previously fell out of the circle of things that I felt comfortable with.

It was all started really, by my aunt one Christmas when she got me my first Himalayan Rock Salt lamp. Which I adored.

That definitely spawned an interest in the power and use of crystals within my home and I read as many books as I could about the subject.

Despite what I told you above about my cynicism, I was actually hugely interested in them as a child. Not that I had any idea about the “power” of crystals, but I just loved to collect them for their beauty. Yes. I was that strange 7 year old with a rock collection.

I’m definitely not in the camp (yet) where I believe that crystal energy is the be all and end all, but I do think that they help me tap in to something within myself.

>>> As an element for focus

Similar to how a dancer picks a “spot” for focus when doing pirouettes so she doesn’t lose her balance. I use crystals to help me focus when I am attempting to meditate or relax. Having something to hold and gaze at helps me focus my thoughts and pop the bubbles of interjection that try to muscle their way in.

>>> In my beauty routine

This is a surface use (no pun intended) but I love utilising my my rose quartz facial roller. I’m not sold on the fact that the rose quartz is helping to beautify me, but I do think that the roller helps improve blood circulation within my face and it certainly helps reduce puffiness.

>>> As a talisman

When I’m going into a meeting for work, or studying as part of my doula training, I put on my rose quartz necklace to serve as a reminder to tap in and channel the loving and nurturing part of myself. If I’m feeling nervous, scared or just need to use my bravery, I put on my sea agate stone. If I’m performing or doing any public speaking, I sling on my Blue Goldstone.

>>> Around the house

Sam might not have any interest or belief in crystals but he thinks the large clear quartz in our fireplace and rose quartz on the hearth our handsome additions to our living room. And why not? They are definitely little pieces of art! Rose quartz traditionally attract love, peaceful energy, and harmony in relationships whilst clear quartz helps amplify intentions and radiate positive energy. (It’s also known to temper stubbornness in Capricorns, which, coincidentally, Sam is.) So maybe the use of the crystals in this instance is psychosomatic – they are beautiful to look at so they help set our minds at restful ease. But who’s to say that that’s not their power?
