Outfitting || Black Maxi Dress

Happy 4th of July to all my American readers! I’m up in Scotland but will be celebrating by eating some American junk food. Since Harold is a half-American dog I will have to rustle up an American treat for him. Perhaps a hotdog. (Though not really – Sam once gave Harold a hotdog and he did not enjoy it).

But back to today’s post. This is one of the outfits that I packed to wear up to Scotland. (Despite the fact that it is freezing) My black maxi dress is just so comfortable to travel in. It’s part of a collection of clothes that I call “traveling clothes”. One thing that these clothes all have in common is that none of them have a waistband. Or buttons. Or zips. I like to travel in sheer comfort. This outfit would be an ideal outfit to wear on a plane. You’d be super comfortable without looking slouchy.

The best thing about the plain black maxi is that you can dress it up or down. Even though it’s something that I’ve earmarked for casual wear, you could easily wear it on more formal occasions with a fancier shoe, some jewellery and a bold lip. But I usually just sling on my trusty denim jacket (my denim jacket is my go-to summer jacket) and slip into my birkos and call it a day.

Though in full disclosure, I am carrying my shoes in most of these pictures because when I have a chance to walk on warm, soft summer grass in my bare feet, I almost always have to kick off my shoes and wiggle my toes in the dirt.

When I think about it, the two things I always wore as a kid growing up in the 90s were dungarees and denim jackets. So really not much has changed. Slap on a scrunchy and I could be transported through time.

To shoot these photos Sam and I went down to the racecourse, which is where we walk Harold (on most non-race days, of course!) The racecourse in York is on the Knavesmire which is a large, green, slightly-marshy un developed area of York that comprises several strays and Hob Moor as well. And it’s one of the best places to walk your dog.

Once you’re in the middle of the Knavesmire, you’re at least a mile from the nearest road on every side so it’s the perfect place to let a doggie off his lead (leash), and let it have a run around. Few things bring me as much joy in life as watching Harold run around – leaping and bounding through the grass. And around the summer solstice, the late sun in York makes large swathes of the Knavesmire visible in semi-dusk till nearly midnight.
