Travel || Frinton-on-Sea and the Blackwater

Frinton-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea are two big hitters in the Essex coastal town community. I was fortunate enough to visit, back in August, before school started again. I absolutely lucked out with the weather as well. It was very warm that day; a relative rarity for this particular August. It was warm enough that even I got into the sea. Albeit, ever so briefly.

The coast near Frinton and Walton-on-the-Naze is particularly beautiful. Both areas seem to not get the massive hoards of people that are around Clacton. Don’t get me wrong, it was busy. But for a hot day in August, social distancing was still completely possible.

It’s a mixture of sandy and stony beach and entirely a day out that I recommend. I really started coveting all the adorable little pastel beach huts. If I lived closer to the seaside, I would most definitely be looking into renting one for the summer season.

Whilst I was in the Essex area, I also went slightly more inland to visit the Blackwater. The Blackwater Estuary is where two river converge and make their way out to the sea. It passes through Maldon first (of the seasalt fame). In fact, Maldon Salt is made using traditional panning techniques from the River Blackwater.

One of my bucket list places to visit is Osea Island, which is an island out in the Blackwater Estuary. The island is only 360 acres large and you can only drive across the causeway during lowtide. In hightide, the water covers the road and it is unpassable, unless by boat. Very ‘The Woman in Black’.

It’s not confirmed but I’d imagine that the Blackwater Estuary was George RR Martin’s inspiration for the Battle of the Blackwater that takes place in Game of Thrones outside of King’s Landing.

Have you visited Frinton-on-Sea and the Blackwater before? What about neighbouring Clacton-on-Sea?
