Travel || Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Madeira

If you are in Funchal, Madeira, I can’t recommend visiting the Monte Palace more! Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Madeira is a 70.000 square meters tropical garden. It’s genuinely the best botanical gardens that I have ever visited.

There’s also an absolutely incredible crystal collection that had my inner-crystal fiend planning an imminent heist.

One of the most interesting characteristics of the Monte Palace Madeira is the existence of a large collection of tile panels placed along the walkways and amongst the vegetation acquired by José Berardo, under the specialist direction of Manuel Leitão. This collection, considered to be one of the most important in the country after that of the National Tile Museum, is made up of Hispano-Moorish tiles of the 15th and 16th centuries and panels produced in Portugal from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

It’s a the top of the hill that the Monte toboggans go down so you could do both in one afternoon. Monte is a suburb, created in 1565 as a residence of many wealthy families, located on a hill north of Funchal – the capital of Madeira Island. It was the last dwelling place of Charles I – the last Austro – Hungarian Emperor, who was expelled and passed away there in 1922. As with many places in Madeira, the entrance ticket included a free glass of Madeiran wine at the cafe. But you are also allowed to bring a picnic. I recommend doing that and making a day of the whole thing!

It’s located at Caminho do Monte 174, 9050-288 Funchal, Portugal. The ticket price is 12.50 Euros per adult and worth every penny.

Have you ever seen such a gorgeous botanical garden before?
