Travel || The Basilica of Saint-Remi, Reims, France

We have finally come to the last of my posts of Reims. The Basilica of Saint-Remi s a medieval abbey church in Reims (Rue Simon). It was founded in the 11th century over the chapel of St. Christophe where St Remi was buried.  It is the largest Romanesque church in northern France.

It was devastated during WWI and rebuilt over the next 40 years. It is filled with the unmarked graves of many famous historical figures including Carloman King of the Franks (Charlemagne’s brother); Lothair I; Louis IV; and Queen Frederonne (with of Charles III).

The basilica houses the relics of Saint Rémi in the center of the choir. The veneration of the relics of Saint Rémi and his repeated miracles attracted many pilgrims. The chapel was enlarged to accompany the body, which was transferred on October 1, which then became his feast day.

It is open 9am – 7pm daily. It is about a 20 minute walk from the centre of town.

It is located at Place du Chanoine Ladame, 51100 Reims.

Have you ever visited the Basilica of Saint-Remi?
