Travel || A Vegan Guide To York

brunch at the perky peacock

I’ve had this guide planned for a long, long time and I thought #veganuary would be the perfect time to finally publish it! York has such an incredible food scene and for a town of its size, a lot of vegan food options!

A Vegan Guide to York

El Piano

Everything served at El Piano is vegan. When the lovely Lindsay was staying with us over the summer we went out for dinner at El Piano and basically had to be rolled out of the restaurant, we were all so stuffed. Service is friendly, but a bit slow. However, the food is insanely good and really reasonably priced! I had the dhal which was delicious (and one of their most famous dishes) but Sam won the food ordering battle with the Bob’s Best Burger – it was massive and a really convincing meat substittue.

El Piano is located at 15-17 Grape Ln, York YO1 7HU.

*** I am sorry to say that El Piano has now closed, weep, after decades of being one of the first completely gluten free and vegan restaurants in the UK.***

Goji Vegetarian Cafe and Deli

You can get food takeaway or eaten in at Goji. Whilst it’s touted as a vegetarian cafe, there are loads of vegan options. They mostly serve light fare: sandwiches, salads, quiches – but the portions are really generous! And luckily for me, most of the cakes that are on offer are vegan! I highly recommend the cardamom and pistachio cake! If the owners of Goji ever wrote a cookbook, I’d snap it up in a heartbeat.

Goji is located at 36 Goodramgate, York YO1 7LF.

Cooplands
It might surprise you to hear, but the Northern bakery chain Cooplands makes a vegan Yum Yum so you can still get a sugary-donuty hit whilst out and about in the centre of town.

One convenient Cooplands location is at: 17 Davygate, York YO1 8QR

Source

Sam and I have been to Source multiple times now: once with family and once with friends, and the food never fails to excite. They cater to everyone: they have meat options, vegetarian options and vegan options. I’ve heard amazing things about the pulled jack fruit bbq, and can personally attest to how good the cauliflower florets are!

Source is located at 1 Castlegate, York YO1 9RN

The Fossgate Social
It’s already made my list of the best coffee shops and cafes in York, and it’s showing up again here!

The Fossgate Social is located at 25 Fossgate, York YO1 9TA.

Once Across the Garden

Once Across the Garden at one point in time had two vegan market stalls; one in the Shambles Market and another in SPARK. At the moment, I believe the SPARK location is closed; however, the Shambles stall lives on. The menu is constantly changing but boasts a delicious selection of bakes and hot food items, with favourites like mac and cheese, bacon sandwiches and sausage rolls. (All entirely vegan).

Once Across the Garden is located each Saturday at the Shambles Market.

Ambiente Tapas

There are two Ambiente Tapas locations in York, and like Source, they are suitable for all dietary proclivities. Whilst there are a lot of meat and cheese heavy items (it is a tapas place, after all), there are still quite a few vegetable only options.

Ambiente Tapas is located at 14 Goodramgate, York YO1 7L and at 31 Fossgate, York YO1 9TA

Filmore & Union

This is actually the first place Sam and I ever ate at in York! Whilst still living in London and on a trip up to York to house-hunt, Sam and I headed off the hanger we were both starting to experience by nipping in to Filmore & Union. They make loads of tasty juices and smoothies, encourage seasonable eating and have lots of tasty, healthy dishes.

Filmore & Union is located at  62A Low Petergate, York YO1 7HZ

Gulp & Graze

They offer single-origin coffee and loads of vegan-friendly (and gluten-free friendly) cakes! Gulp & Graze has one of my favourite brunch options in town, a thick sourdough with avocado, lime, mint, cherry tomatoes and pine nuts that they easily veganise for me by holding off on the feta.

Gulp & Grave is located at 110 Micklegate, York.

Humpit

Humpit is somewhat of a Northern chain with other locations in Sheffield, Newcastle and Leeds. They mainly serve hummus, falafel and pitas. It’s a great place to go for a quick, tasty lunch.

Humpit is located at 12a Church St, York YO1 8BE.

True Story

True Story is a family-run 100% vegan cafe located up near the York Minster. The menu is small but well thought out. They are have a really cosy vibe and are also dog-friendly.

True Story is at 18 Lord Mayors Walk

The (N)ice Cream Factory

This dessert store offers a variety of vegan frozen treats like peanut butter Nice cream and Oreo. All of their ice creams are hand-crafted and frozen using liquid nitrogen. (Though not all of them are vegan.)

The (N)ice Cream Factory is located at 15 Fossgate, York YO1 9TA.

Ippuku Tea House

Ippuku Tea House is a Japanese cafe with a variety of vegan and gluten-free options, such as pancakes, dunburis, sushi bowls and miso soup.

Ippuku Tea House is located at 15 Blake St, York YO1 8QJ.
