Travel || Aysgarth Falls

Prior to Lockdown 2, local lockdowns and Lockdown 3; before the weather turned cold and I moved away from Yorkshire, I finally visited Aysgarth Falls. Aysgarth had been on my Yorkshire bucket list for ages and seeing them on the last day was an excellent way to pay my respects to an area that I love dearly.

are a triple flight of waterfalls, surrounded by woodland and farmland, carved out by the River Ure over an almost one-mile stretch on its descent to mid-Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales, near the village of Aysgarth. The falls are quite spectacular after heavy rainfall as thousands of gallons of water cascade over the series of broad limestone steps, which are divided into three stages: Upper Force, Middle Force and Lower Force. The village itself is adorable and well-worth a visit.

There are lots of places for picnics along the falls and there’s a tearoom and pub in the village (COVID allowing).

Any fans of ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ might recognise the falls from the film. Or you can follow in the footsteps of John Ruskin, J. M. W. Turner and William Wordsworth and visit the falls for yourself.

On a warm day, you might find social distancing a bit of a struggle. Visiting the falls is free, however there is a charge for parking.

There is also a regular bus service between Leyburn and Hawes which provides access to the village of Aysgarth. The National Park Centre and Falls are a 10 minute walk away.
