Travel || Curral das Freiras (Valley of the Nuns)

Curral das Freiras is a small village situated in the crater of an extinct volcano. Its very remote and high up in a mountainous area. It was founded in 1566 when the nuns from the Santa Clara convent fled from pirates attacking Funchal and found seclusion here. (They also brought the convent treasure with them.)

The village is tiny and picturesque – you don’t need a whole day here but it’s a fantastic day-trip out from Funchal if you only have a few spare hours. It would be a place to visit on the same day as seeing Camara de Lobos.

You’ll get some of the most stunning views of in all of Madeira from here! Don’t tune out on the drive because the twisting-turning (slightly terrifying roads) are extraordinarily beautiful

Have you visited the Valley of the Nuns?
