Just before the holidays, I was fortunate enough to go on a press trip to Fuerteventura sponsored by Suite Hotel Atlantis Fuerteventura Resort and Alpharooms UK.

I had never been to Fuerteventura before and I was so excited to go. I must admit, that I had to look up Fuerteventura on the map – I had no idea how far south the Canary Islands were! I thought they were close to Mallorca. How wrong I was! However, the joyous thing about going so far south in December is getting a bit of winter sun. The average during the duration of our time there was 21 C. Perfection.

The hotel itself was stunning. It’s a very impressive sight when you pull up as it has quite a grand entrance way complete with fountain. At check in, we were given our wrist bands and shown to our rooms.

My room was absolutely massive. The bed was superking sized and the room had a lovely little patio that opened up to the outside from the “sitting area” part of the room. I was on the ground floor, so for others that would be the balcony.  The mini bar was stocked with complimentary drinks and the bathroom included loads of little toiletries. (Handy as I’d definitely forgotten a comb!)

I was a “Premium” guest which meant that I was in the Adults-Only section of the hotel. We had our own pool, bar and breakfast room, though guests in this section have access to all the other areas as well. But if you’re traveling with children, don’t fear – the rest of the hotel welcomes children and there’s even a brilliant area for them to play, a child-friendly pool, the Alantini Club where small children can be looked after, play and do arts and crafts, and the Teen Lounge with computers, Playstations and a cinema. It’s one of the most family-friendly hotels I’ve ever been too. In fact, Fuerteventura as a whole was extremely family-friendly. There was even a “families only” security gate at the airport.

One of the most noticeable features of the hotel were the swimming pools. There were 8 swimming pools in all, so there was no fighting over sunbeds and waking up early to leave a towel to reserve a lounge chair. (Which is something that really bums me out on a holiday!) There is also a spa and a gym onsite.

All inclusive sometimes gets a really bad reputation conjuring up images of dodgy buffets and watered down drinks, but I can assure you that that couldn’t be farther from the truth here. The drinks were all absolutely incredible – what a joy it was to be drinking Sangria in December! – and they made a killer gin and tonic as well. But my beverage of choice during our time there was their Cava. It was dry and crisp, just the way I liked it.

The food was all lovely. There are several different restaurants and bars on site (although some require reservation in advance, and some are only available for Premium guests). There were plenty of vegetarian options for non-meat eaters like me, and the buffets were plentiful whilst the quality stayed high. I know the other girls spoke highly of the cheeses on offer, and a personal highlight for me was the fried ice cream made to order as a dessert at Rambutan one evening. But I think the gorgeous, fresh breakfasts every morning were one of the highlights of my stay.

The hotel was about 50 metres from the beach, so I often walked down there in the early evenings to watch the sunset. The hotel offers a “free” shuttle service to the Grandes Playas in Corralejo, the best beaches on the island. And the hotel is close to the Dunas de Corralejo Nature Reserve.
