When you’re visiting Barcelona, the Sagrada Familia (quite fairly) gets all the tourist attention. But don’t exhaust all of your church quotas without visiting Barcelona Cathedral (also called ‘La Seu’ by some).

The Cathedral is situated in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona, which is absolutely charming and full of bars and restaurants strewn atmospherically through the narrow medieval streets.

Most of the principle work on Barcelona Cathedral was done in the 14th century. The Gothic architecture of the building is amazing. Because it’s so spectacular is actually considered a minor basilica instead of just a cathedral.

But my favourite thing about the Cathedral was Santa Eulàlia’s Crypt. (Eulàlia is the patron saint of Barcelona.) Eulàlia refused to recant her Christianity and was tortured by the Romans. Legend has it that she was put into a barrel filled with knives and then rolled down the street. Then her breasts were cut off, she was crucified and then decapitated. The legend continues that a dove flew out of her neck when she was decapitated. What an awful story, right?

If you visit, you need to make sure not to miss visiting the cloister with the pond. You might notice people gravitating towards it as it is also home to 13 white geese. As per tradition, there are always 13 white geese in the cloister to represent the age that Eulàlia was when she was martyred).

I have visited a lot of cathedrals and basilicas and Barcelona cathedral was one of the only ones that enforced quite a strict dress code. (Shoulders and knees covered). I saw a woman asked to not go in, and she was wearing a midi skirt that only showed the tiniest bit of knee.

Barcelona Cathedral is located at Pla de la Seu, s/n, 08002 Barcelona, Spain. The Cathedral is free to enter, but there are specific visiting times.
