Travel || Holiday Inn, Alexanderplatz, Berlin

room

I’ve stayed in a fair few hotels in Berlin now and the Holiday Inn in Alexanderplatz is one of my favourites. Yes it’s quite corporate and chain-y  and you can find a lot of boutique hotels that are more exciting, but for the value and location, there are few in the area that are quite as good.

The hotel is situated about a 5-7 minute walk (the longer time for people like me who always get turned around in Alexanderplatz) to the train platforms. It’s so convenient for getting around Berlin, but it’s also not in the main square and it’s set back off of one of the side roads so you also miss a lot of the crowds and the noise. (Which is a good thing in my opinion!). I’ve stayed in other hotels in Alexanderplatz and really struggled to get to sleep due to noise. I think at one point in time, my room was across from an all-night rave, but that’s Berlin for you!

The rooms were small, but very well proportioned – and for a fairly standard hotel, they did put in some reasonable effort into the room style and design. The best aspect of the rooms were the duvets – which were perfectly fluffy and warm!

The wifi also worked really well, which was a huge bonus for me, as the last hotel that I stayed in in Berlin had a really patchy connection. Check in is at 3pm and check out is at noon. I arrived in Berlin fairly early in the afternoon, and the hotel very kindly let me check into my room a bit early, and a 12pm check out, in my opinion, is wonderful – especially if you want to have a bit of a lie-in on your last morning in Berlin.  The hotel also has a gym (which I did not use) and a business centre (which I also did not use) so your guess is almost as good as mine.

Breakfast in the mornings was fairly standard in terms of continental buffets. I can always count on most German buffets at least having bread, fruit and a vegan spread for me to get by on breakfast on. Though for meat-eating friends, the spread is much, much more plentiful. And I heard good things about the omelettes. The one thing that needed a lot of improvement was the coffee. I found it quite poor, but Berlin has a wealth of fantastic coffee shops so that really doesn’t pose too much of an imposition.

The Holiday Inn Alexanderplatz is located at Theanolte-Bähnisch-Straße 2, 10178 Berlin.

Rooms start at 143 Euros.
