I was invited along to the National Railway Museum to see their new exhibition, One Billion Journeys, a photography exhibit from the Chinese photographer Wang Fuchun.
Fuchun has spent the past 40 years taking photos in trains along different Chinese rail lines. It was fascinating to hear him speak and learn more about his photography process. (And hear about some of the perils of taking photos of strangers whilst they are semi-unaware.) He touched upon how difficult it is sometimes to take photos openly.
One of my favourite things that Fuchun mentioned was that he considers himself “a professional thief” as he’s always waiting to catch a moment and find a real snapshot of life. He prefers to take his photos on longer train journeys because the longer the journey, the more tired people are and then the more of themselves that they reveal.
I won’t share too many photos from the exhibit itself, otherwise it will sap some of the joy from it if you have the chance to see it for yourself. But all the photos are in black and white and there’s also a lovely accompanying film in the exhibit. I absolutely adored how intimate some of the photographs were and it completely took me by surprise how much humanity you could see on a train journey.
The National Railway Museum is one of my favourite free things to do in York, and it’s something that I always highly recommend.
The exhibit is on until 11 August 2019.
The Railway Museum is located at Leeman Rd, York YO26 4XJ
