York || Gulp & Graze

vegan avocado toast

I posted on instagram ages ago that I had a new favourite place for brunch in York and it is Gulp & Graze. I walk past it all the time, but I’d foolishly not visited it. What an error that was!

They offer single-origin coffee that changes seasonally, and a killer menu that has something on it for pretty much all dietary requirements. I opted for my usual coffee drink: an oat milk latte. Sam went for something a bit more unusual (because he’s a coffee fiend, normally). He chose the green smoothie.

Now I pride myself on being a great food orderer, and like to think of myself as the causer of food envy. But oh my. His smoothie. I couldn’t resist from taking greedy gulps. It has a lot of your normal green juice ingredients: kale, spinach, apple, citrus. But it also had an amazing balance of ginger that made it warming and refreshing all at the same time. It felt so healthy and good for you whilst still being so tasty. Since eating at Gulp & Graze 9 out of 10 times when Sam asks me what I’m in the mood for, I answer “that green smoothie”.

Now on to the food. I ordered the sourdough avocado toast with plump cherry tomatoes, pine nuts, mint and spinach. It was made to be a vegetarian dish and include feta cheese on top, but the restaurant happily amended it for me to help veganise it. It was a deliciously balanced dish and I’ve taken inspiration from them and add pine nuts to my own avocado toast frequently now.

Sam went for the posh beans on toast. There were thick slices of sourdough bread with lots of different types of beans in a rich passata sauce, topped with a poached egg. I was surprised that he hadn’t opted for a meat dish (since he never really gets meat at home) but this really struck his fancy. He gobbled it down in no time, and gave it a big thumbs up of approval.

We also split an order of the thick cut sweet potato chips as it was much closer to afternoon lunch time than a proper brunch time. The sweet potato chips were fine, but they paled in comparison to the deliciousness of our mains.

They also offer more “lunchy” type fair, so it’s a great place to go for brunch. There’s breakfast for the breakfast lovers and sandwiches and more for people who want something a bit more substantial. It’s definitely a place that I’d bring friends and family to, as well as recommend to visitors. Plus it’s just a few minutes walk away from the train station which makes it very handy!
