York || Solar System Trail

The York Solar System Trail is absolutely incredible. I can’t believe that I had been in York for almost 4 years before I cycled the York Solar System Trail.

To get to the Solar System head down Tadcaster Road as if you are going towards the giant Tesco. The Solar System is signposted. The model lies on the national cycle network route 6.

But what is the York Solar System Trail, you might ask. Well, it is a scale model of the Solar System that is spread out along 6.4 miles of the old East Coast main-line railway. Along the trail, you can find scale models of all the planets in our solar system as well as models of the Cassini and Voyager spacecraft.

The 6.4 miles run along a disused train line from the outskirts of York to the nearby village of Riccall, features a to-scale model of the solar system.

While biking down this scenic path, cyclists will notice planets of our solar system represent. Uniquely, the distances between each planet are on a scale of 575,872,239:1. This means that walking faster than the speed of light along the path is a breeze, and a cycle will get you to around 10 times the speed of light.

There are facts about the planets and solar system that feature as you cycle along. If you get hungry as you cycle along, you can nip off to The Blacksmith’s Arms which is just a short jaunt off the track at Naburn.

You can download a map of the route here.

Have you ever cycled the solar trail before?
