A Dog-Friendly Guide to York

Having a dog has really changed the way Sam and I travel and go out. We try to take him with us whenever possible, because we both feel too guilty to leave him behind. Plus, we are able to stay out longer and have bigger adventures when we don’t need to rush back home to let Harold out.

Luckily we’ve discovered that York, as a city, is fairly dog friendly.  So here’s my Dog-Friendly Guide to York:

The Perky Peacock

It is located at North Street Postern Tower, Under Lendal Bridge, York YO1 7DJ

I’d wanted to have brunch at the Perky Peacock before we had even moved to York. I spotted its few sought-after outdoor seats on the bridge right by the river and I was sold! But then we moved here in the frigid cold of November, so I had to wait till it was warmer to nab one of those coveted spots! The menu is limited, but so tasty. You can see my blog post about it here. The Perky is SOOOO dog friendly. They love wee beasts. Harold gets spoiled with treats whenever he goes in. He’s even made it onto the Perky’s instagram account.

The Nook

It is located at 3a Castlegate, York, YO1 9RN

The Nook is an interesting street food restaurant in the centre of town that has a really great community vibe. It is also extremely dog-friendly. Just take a peek at their instagram if you don’t believe me.

The Brigantes Bar

It is located at 114 Micklegate, York, YO1 6JX

Brigantes Bar serves up a mean Sunday roast and a fair few local beers. They are also featured on Visit York’s Dog-friendly guide.

Filmore and Union

It is located at 62A Low Petergate, York YO1 7HZ

They’ll always have a special place in my heart, because when we came up from London to go flat-hunting, we camped out at Filmore & Union sucking down their fresh-squeezed tasty juices and smoothies. It’s a bit pricey option (about £4 per juice) but really fresh and delicious!

The Block

It is located at 54 Goodramgate, York, YO1 7LF

The Block also serves up a range of vegan and vegetarian, so it’s an all-around winner in my eyes. It’s quite close to the Minster, so it’s a great place to go for lunch when you’re sight-seeing.

Fossgate Social

It is located at 25 Fossgate, York YO1 9TA

Fossgate Social is a unique coffee shop that serves great food and has a licensed bar if you fancy something a little more adult to drink. In the summer, they have the perfect sun-trap seating.

Gulp & Graze

It is located at 110 Micklegate, York, YO1 6JX

Gulp & Graze is one of my personal favourites for a light brunch in York. You can read my whole post on it here. So it’s great news to me that it’s also dog-friendly.

Spark York

It is located at 17 – 21 Piccadilly, York, YO1 9PB, UK

Spark is a collection of pop up restaurants, shops, cafes and bars in repurposed shipping containers. A la the Shoreditch Boxpark. We went to Spark last summer more times than I can count. All the seating is at communal tables outside and it is dog-friendly.
