When Very reached out to collaborate on a campaign I was thrilled. I had been looking to spice up my winter wardrobe and I’m absolutely enamored by everything dark academia at the moment. I think it was my personal aesthetic all along – I just never had a name for it before TikTok came along. A gloomy mood and a Gothic ambience? Sign me up.
If you were to create a Winter dark academia capsule wardrobe you’d need several key pieces.
First, set the mood for yourself. Tune into the vibe by watching Knives Out, The Beguiled, Dead Poet’s Society or Kill Your Darlings. Read The Secret History, Frankenstein or my personal favourite: If We Were Villians. If you really want to push the boat out in terms of authenticity, head to a museum. (My favourite local museum is The Fitzwilliam in Cambridge.)
For bottoms, I’d opt for a good checked skirt, and a tailored pair of black high-waisted trousers. If you wanted to opt for a dress, I adore the idea of this high-neck and lantern sleeve on this black knitted dress. (Both are styles that you frequently find in dark academia pieces.) In order to get away with wearing your skirt and knitted dress in the winter, you’ll also need a pair of black knee-high socks. Chunky boots, oxfords and mary-janes are all strong shoe choices when dressing in this aesthetic, but in winter I think you can also get away with a preppy classic – the brown riding boot. I’d pair them with a pair of black brogues as your two staple shoes for winter.
On top, you must have some version of a mock neck / turtle neck jumper. Throw in a knitted vest. Add a dash of blazer. And you must have a slightly oversized button up shirt. Finish it all off with a good camel coat.
In terms of accessories, keep it very simple with a classic watch, a very delicate gold necklace and maybe a headband. For a bag, focus on a long-wearing leather or faux leather satchel.
